Shaking For Butter

Saturday January 28th, 2012
When we made this butter from heavy whipping cream for the ward pioneer picnic back in July, it sparked an idea for Ellie's Science project this year.
Problem Statement:  If shaken in a jar, will cold refrigerated cream or warmer room temperature cream turn into butter first?
Hypothesis:  If shaken in a jar, then I predict that the warmer room temperature cream will turn into butter before the cold cream because along with the motion of the shaking, the butter also needs to get warm before it turns into butter.
Conclusion: After doing my experiment, I accept my hypothesis that if cream is shaken in a jar then warmer room temperature cream will turn into butter first in comparison to refrigerated cream because along with the motion of the shaking the creams temperature needs to get warmer before it can turn into butter. In conducting my experiment all three times, each time in the shaking process the room temperature cream turn into butter first.
In shaking the jars, the little fat and protein globs in the cream hit each other and stick together, forming a larger and larger glob which was butter. I learned that the temperature and motion (energy) create a chemical change that turns cream (a liquid) into butter (a solid.) I think I will make my own butter like this again because it tastes yummy and creamy and it’s a more soft and like whipped butter, you can even add salt if you like your butter salted. You should try it too!

The Science fair was last Thursday and both Ellie and her friend Ava were recognized as two of the finalists from their grade asked to the District science fair in a week, good job Ellie.

The President with our CNG Conversions in Las Vegas, Nevada

The two Ford Escape Taxis behind the President in the picture are taxi's that World CNG converted to cng here in our Kent location and shipped to Las Vegas.  Yesterday, the President spoke at a UPS Fleet facility in Las Vegas Nevada and in Colorado at a military base.  While we aren't the biggest fans of our current president, we do stand behind him on this issue as it applies to clean energy because it not only makes our earth a cleaner place but it benefits the future of our company and it's objectives. Here's a few quotes from Obama's speech he gave yesterday:

"We are the Saudi Arabia of natural gas," he told the military crowd in detailing his strategy to increase domestic oil and gas development while promoting investment and innovation in clean energy development."
"We've got to keep at it. Think about what could happen if we do," Obama said. "Think about an America where more cars and trucks are running on domestic natural gas than on foreign oil. Think about an America where our companies are leading the world in developing natural gas technology and creating a generation of new energy jobs. ... We can do this."
"We should do more, though,” the president said. “That's why we're here today. First, let's get more of these natural gas vehicles on the road. The federal fleet of cars is leading by example. Turns out the federal government has a lot of cars. We buy a lot of cars.” Obama also called for the Energy Department to launch a new contest “that encourages our country’s brightest scientists and engineers and entrepreneurs to discover new breakthroughs for natural gas vehicles.”

Also in the President's state of the Union Address he gave praise to American-made energy and specifically called for the development of natural gas:

“Nowhere is the promise of innovation greater than in American-made energy. Over the last three years, we’ve opened millions of new acres for oil and gas exploration, and tonight, I’m directing my Administration to open more than 75 percent of our potential offshore oil and gas resources. Right now, American oil production is the highest that it’s been in eight years. That’s right – eight years. Not only that – last year, we relied less on foreign oil than in any of the past sixteen years.
But with only 2 percent of the world’s oil reserves, oil isn’t enough. This country needs an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of American energy – a strategy that’s cleaner, cheaper, and full of new jobs.
We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly one hundred years, and my Administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy. Experts believe this will support more than 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade. And I’m requiring all companies that drill for gas on public lands to disclose the chemicals they use. America will develop this resource without putting the health and safety of our citizens at risk.
The development of natural gas will create jobs and power trucks and factories that are cleaner and cheaper, proving that we don’t have to choose between our environment and our economy. And by the way, it was public research dollars, over the course of thirty years, that helped develop the technologies to extract all this natural gas out of shale rock – reminding us that Government support is critical in helping businesses get new energy ideas off the ground. What’s true for natural gas is true for clean energy. In three years, our partnership with the private sector has already positioned America to be the world’s leading manufacturer of high-tech batteries. Because of federal investments, renewable energy use has nearly doubled. And thousands of Americans have jobs because of it.”

ICED OVER and in the DARK!

January 2012
Frosty, the iced over Snow Man, look at that carrot nose encased in a layer of ice.
We lost electricity along with a good portion of the state due to this snow storm and the after math of wind and freezing slow/sleet/rain.  It was an experience, good to have things back to normal though.  It kind of puts life and things into perspective with the reality of a major natural disaster and life without the normal everyday luxuries we take for granted, with the reminders of preparation for the unknown.  Our little city of Sumner was a mad house, the line just for gas wrapped around the entire parking lot, hours of waiting...while other gas stations around were all out of gas. Happy to announce that Jarom's Iguana survived the storm- no heating lamps but a trusty gas fireplace to thank.  Also happy to announce that someone can have a baby boy as a blanket that I've been crocheting in my (before non-existent spare time) is now just about complete.  There was other damage around many areas but the down side here are the poor trees- so many are gone/fallen/or cut in half, a bit from the wind but most from the weight of the thick layers of frozen ice on them...I feel so sad or them.
We saw a generator at Costco awhile back that you just wire into your gas line, I'm thinking that is a grand idea and a wise investment...really any generator would be better than none.

Winter Has ARRIVED!

January 15-18, 2012
A Red Wagon full of SnOwBaLLs, ready for a snowball FiGhT!
Enjoying the snow inside and out.
Matt was thrilled as much as the kids to get a day off of work, living it up.
Two days before the big snow hit (actually on MLK day), the kids got a preview day of Snow that fell.  They are loving every minute of it, that and getting the week off of school.
Josh and his friend Gabby enjoyed playing Santa and Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, it was totally cute!
Ellie even knitted herself some pink gloves for the snow days...not sure how warm these gloves would keep her hands out in the snow, she ended up giving them away to her friend Madison.
