A Season of Change

September 30, 2010
Our baby girl is growing up.  Is it really the last day of September already?!  My goodness that went fast, with the Fall Season and the change of weather, it has proved to spark changes with Brooklynne as well which have been good but at the same time if I'm being 100% honest a bit sad as well.  Both Brooke and I were pretty sick with a yucky cold bug (the one that I hear is really going around,) it starts in the head and sinuses, moves to the throat and then for me the whole achey body and then watch out here comes the drainage and constant running faucet (I mean nose) and finally the caboose that pretty much runs you over...the congestion and cough~pretty typical of this time of the year.  This past week has been on the miserable side for Brooklynne since she ended up with a triple whammie, after too many sleepless nights her two top teeth FINALLY cut through the skin, so that along with the sickness and then since Saturday night she couldn't sleep and fussed, well literally screamed all night long yet she didn't want to nurse since she was so stuffed up and couldn't breathe when she'd attempt to latch on.  Matt and I decided it was our perfect opportunity (unfortunately under not so perfect circumstances) to weane the baby from breast feeding. I figured she wasn't wanting to nurse so I might as well cut her off all together, cold turkey.  Being a year, it was time for her and me, it was more of a habit and comforting thing for Brooke to wake up through the night to nurse (way too many times) then I'd also nurse her typically once in the afternoon and before she went to bed but table foods had started to pretty much agree with her system and she was eating them quite well.  My only concern was that she wouldn't drink milk for ANYTHING out of a bottle or sippy cup and I knew that babies need that fat in milk until at least two years for brain development so I wasn't even quite sure if milk would agree with her tummy since our kids take a little longer than the norm to adjust lactose.  Matt felt that if she wasn't given an option that she would eventually take it and... he was right!  Because of her strong-will, you can call it that or completely spoiled baby of six syndrome, Brooklynne is pretty used to getting her way and all temper breaks out when things go different.  Who would have guessed from such an adorable, happy sweet baby right?  We had some very challenging days and nights following the initial weaning process!!! It was pretty miserable but if a mother is already going to be sick with a yucky cold, you might as well throw in a fussy miserable baby and painful engorged breasts full of milk into the mix right?! Like anything, things could've be worse though...  Not sure how smart that move was but I am delighted to say that things are getting so much better.  Brooke will now drink milk (it does have to be warmed first, I have never warmed regular milk for any of my kids besides her...but she drinks it and it agrees with her and that's all that matters, THANK goodness!) There were a few nights of Matt sleeping on the couch and I trying to content a crying baby who only wanted the main comfort she knew and loved for the past year of her life while tears in my own eyes (not sure if mine were tears of pure sleepless exhaustion or tears of sadness I felt for Brookie and the change it was for her- maybe a bit of both.)  But with her personality, I knew the longer I waited to weane her the harder it was going to be on the both of us.  So, she is officially weaned of nursing and all in all it really is a good thing!  I just wish I could speed up the "drying-out" process of this engorgement stage, I don't remember it taking so long and being this painful with the other kids, maybe because I weaned them out in a slower process. (However, I've nursed Brooklynne the longest out of any of our kids.) In reality, maybe I should just savor this time because after nursing six kids and I am dried up, there probably won't be much left in that department, ha ha- sad but true! As far as the colds go, both of us are a lot better and on the down hill which makes one have a completely revived appreciation for the blessing of good health. Only now the rest of the family seems to be coming down with the bug...yep, the inevitable here we go again!  On a side note: We are THRILLED to say that for the first time in her 13 months of life our Brooklynne slept through the ENTIRE night last night, from 8:30pm until 7:00am this morning- hallelujah, it was nice to be reminded what a good nights rest feels like- we love you so much Brooklynne Pearl!
Along with two top teeth, no longer a nursing baby yet now a walking baby- Brooke also finally crawls down the stairs.  She has crawled up the stairs for quite some time now but before now she was just too scared to crawl down; however, now she has recently taken our instruction of turning her little body around to crawl down the stairs- way to go Brookie!  So I am just wondering- where were all of those pass-a-fires hiding when we so needed to find just one the other night, for some crazy reason you either have none or you have all of them.

Mistified Morning Webs

September 29, 2010
I am always at awe when I really take a good look at a Spiders web!  Early this morning when I went out to the front yard to straighten up (Josh had left the unwound hose on the front grass along with a watering can and skate board from last night that never got put away.) So we have a tree in the front yard that must be a spider magnet either that or a perfect tree for them to easily spin their webs on because every year around this time there are always a ton of spider webs to be found all over the tree.  These webs looked so cool this morning because they were all misted from the morning fog that we had.  No spiders were to be found on the webs (which I was kinda hoping to catch at least one mama spidey in a pic, but their webs were really a beautiful sight.)  It makes you wonder just how such a little spider can spin those webs all by their little lonesome.  Spider webs (them along with pigs at the fair) always bring back memories of my mom when she was raising us as children, one chapter book I vividly remember her reading to us was Charlotte's Web, it has always been one of my favorites!  It gets me thinking that maybe I should take the time to read my kids a chapter book.  I used to love it when teachers at school would read chapter books to the class as well, now that I think about it the stories and books that were read to me as a child are the ones I remember the most, it probably stems from the fact that I wasn't the best reader as a child so I didn't really enjoy reading books myself. Anyways, to clarify we aren't horrible parents- we DO read to our children at home- we read little books all of the time and the older ones read chapter books on their own of course and I guess the BOM is a chapter book that we read daily- but it's kind of fun to look forward to a good novel like storyline that really draws in all of the kids attention where you take off where you left the day or night before, this might make their required nightly reading a bit easier as well- okay, I've convinced myself-- I need to go check out some good chapter books at the library that will gather the kids attention both the younger and older...I know I've read it with Bre a few years back but maybe we should start off with Charlotte's Web again.

We took the kids out of school on Wednesday to do the Fair thing.  This was the first year we've ever pulled them out of school for the day- so it was a very special year!  We decided to do the "dizzy pass" deal and it's not offered on the weekends when we typically would try to go.  It was a packed day full of plenty of fun and excitement!  The weather was ideal, it was warm into the evening and we didn't end up pulling our jackets out until after 9:00pm.  I think we pretty much did a bit of everything for the full fair experience!  The animals, the dairy bar, the cotton candy, the caramel apples, the rides, the games, crusty pups, elephant ears, exhibits, the fall harvest,
Josh was even in heaven when he got to put on a banana suit for a picture! It was so cute when I gave Brookie a piece of cotton candy she was getting a bit tired and she thought I was giving her a blankie- she rubbed the cotton candy next to her face like she does with all of her soft blankets, she was quite confused when I kept attempting to stick it in her mouth for her- of course after the first taste, it was all over though...mmmm, mmmm good- pure sugar!  A few highlights of the day: the older four kids had fun walking on water in these big blown up balls, they reminded me of hamsters! BreAnna got her whole head of hair curled in a demonstration with a new cool ceramic curling iron with a bit of dads help.  Ellie bargained with a kind man at his hat station and paid $11.00 for a $15.00 hat, way to wheel and deal Miss Ellie. Matt was sure to please by winning the kids some stuffed animals and they even won a few of their own, Spencer was happy to get his first fair caramel apple covered in m and m's,  I was happy to get my 1/2 raspberry 1/2 cinnamon and sugar elephant ear and root beer float, Jarom and Spencer went on the gravetron (as a tradition) only Jarom made the mistake of scarfing down a piece of pepperoni pizza right before he got on the ride, he got a bit of a sore tummy for a while, we also met up with Brodie and Stephanie and Jake and Sarah with their kids for a bit to do some rides and games with the cousins which was fun. The only let down was Ellie didn't get to go on the big roller coaster- being the dizzy pass day the lines for the rides were crazy and we didn't want to wait in that line forever, she was pretty bumbed about that one but there's always next year.  We enjoyed a good foot vibration before heading back to the car, we were on our feet for a long time!  We had a fun-filled (and might I add tummy-filled) day, we closed the place down getting to our car after 11:00pm, after baths and showers were taken for all of the kids, they were in bed by mid night...not the best bed time for a school night.  Although I am happy to say that all of the kids caught their bus on time the following morning but I do have to admit 6:00am sure came early that morning!
